Southport’s Botanic Gardens Fernery Set to Close November 19th, 2014 jmr jmr Latest News Shares Comments Sefton Council bosses have just informed the 3 remaining council staff here at Botanic that they may not have a job after Christmas… Due to more cutbacks that have to be made. If that is the case then the fernery and avairy will also close down. Then the Botanic Gardens will be no more as we know it. The 2 remaining gardeners who work for English Landscapes may also be removed. The volunteers will also go as they originally came here to help and work alongside paid workers , and to raise money for the greenhouse staff to grow and provide plants for the gardens, as Sefton MBC had to stop this funding. Most of the flowers in Botanic now come from monies raised from the volunteers. So unless we all kick up a fuss and start petitions and complaining to our local councillors and cabinet members then the Botanic Gardens will become an overgrown patch of land. Too think Botanic Gardens was known as ” Southport`s Jewel in The Crown ” All the staff that work here are dedicated and work beyond their means. Martin & Sue in the Greenhouses ( Nursery ) and Gary bird man ( Avairy) often work 7 days a week, they have been here for years, they love their jobs. Stewart & Marti ( English Landscape Gardeners ) do as much as they possibly can with help from volunteers, as 23 acres is a lot for just 2 men to look after. Its a very worrying time for us all.
