Volunteers from Southport Samaritans were fundraising today (Sunday 24th March 2013) at Tesco Supermarket in Kew, Southport.

They were helping customers fill up their shopping bags and taking donations if offered.

To continue to operate and provide their service to their callers, they raise all of the necessary funds themselves to keep the Branch going.

They receive no Government funding and rely totally upon the generosity of the general public, the support of local community organisations, Lottery Grants, private donations and the ingenuity of their volunteers in fundraising.

In 1977, the Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee, Liverpool Football Club won the European Cup for the first time and on 28 April the Southport & District Branch of Samaritans was opened.

Now one of 19 Branches in the North West Region and of 201 across UK and the Republic of Ireland, Southport Samaritans (a registered charity) has about 90 listening volunteers at any one time and receives on average over 30,000 contacts from callers a year.

Contact can be in a variety of ways, by telephone, face-to-face callers to the Branch or by e-mail.
