Southport Residents Beware Of Council Tax Scam May 9th, 2014 jmr jmr Latest News Shares Comments Sefton Council is urging residents to be vigilant when paying their Council Tax after a resident made a one-off payment using a rogue website. Staff were alerted to the website www.paycounciltax.co.uk after a Sefton man lost money after paying his monthly Council Tax via the site. The rogue website is part of a nationwide scam and has since been shut down. Sefton Council is now alerting people to these types of scam websites and asking residents to make sure they only use official ways to pay their Council Tax. Margaret Rawding, Sefton Council’s Head of Corporate Finance & ICT, said: “So far we have only been made aware of one incident in the borough where a resident was tricked into using this website. “The site has since been closed down but that isn’t to say similar ones may spring up elsewhere under a different name trying to con people out of their cash. “The quickest and easiest way to pay your Council Tax bill online is to log onto www.sefton.gov.uk/counciltax and use the safe and secure online payment option. “This is really easy to use and gives you peace of mind that it is a legitimate site for paying.” Sefton Council Trading Standards has been alerted to the scam and for help and advice on all consumer issues, visit www.adviceguide.org.uk. Sefton residents can also pay their bills at post offices and local shops showing the PayPoint symbol, or using the automated payment line on 0151 934 4697. Most people use Direct Debit to pay their Council Tax and to set this up, go to the Council Tax information online or call 0845 140 0845.
