Southport Police missed a potential drugs haul after intercepting a possible drug deal

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “Merseyside Police can confirm that the driver of a Ford Focus was stopped at 7.40pm on Friday, 8 January, on Elswick Road, Southport, for a bail offence and also having no licence or insurance.

“The man was arrested and a recovery firm was called to collect the car, as is standard procedure. Officers have no automatic powers to search a vehicle subject to a roadside stop unless there is suspicion it is being used to carry prohibited or stolen goods.

“The officers left the scene to take the driver into custody.

“As the car was being recovered three men in a black vehicle arrived at the scene and requested to take items out of the Ford Focus. The recovery driver refused and was assaulted.  The men then removed an item from the car and left the scene. It is not clear at this stage what the item was.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact officers in Sefton on 0151 777 3737 or the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.”
