From age 12-17 he lived at his auntie’s shop in Forest Road, Southport next door to Booths the grocers on the corner and St Lukes Taxis and Blanche hairdressers on the other side. Pictured above is Ron’s mother outside the shop in 1952. Greenwoods newsagents were on the Rose Hill side. He wonders if any of OTS News readers remember it. E & M Sherlock – confectioners and grocers. They made all their own pies etc in gas ovens in the cellars and had only gas lighting right up to 1959. Commuters to Manchester used to order stuff on their way to St Lukes Station for the 8.30 express to Manchester (usually a ‘namer’) and collect on their way home at night. The shop is now part of ‘wallpaper Johns’ shop that was burned down.
