Southport mum highlights the importance of a smear test

Southport mum Sarah O’Callaghan shares story to warn other young girls too scared to have a smear test.

Sarah said: “I wasn’t going to publicly share this but here goes… If I can stop one person going through what I have I will have made a difference!

I am embarrassed to say it but I was to scared to go for a smear test! What makes this embarrassment worse is that I am nearly 30years old! Despite having been sent several letters from my GP asking me to make an appointment I was never brave enough to do it…

I felt embarrassed about getting such a procedure done and continually put it off… Before I knew it the weeks rolled into months and the months into years!

I finally booked in with the nagging of my best friend Leanne Wilson and thank God I did, you always think it will never happen to you but I got the devastating news that I did have cancer but the good news was they caught it literally just in time to have it removed along with the remaining abnormal cells being burnt away.

I wanted to share this, please if you are due a smear test book in and don’t leave it any longer.

I had no symptoms so without going for the test and leaving it a few more months this could of been a very different story.
