Southport MP urges public to contact him over town centre

MP John Pugh has described the Planning Inspectorate’s hearing in Southport over the planned out of town Sainsbury’s supestore this week as critical for the future of the two centre. In a sharply worded submission to the inspectors he has made it clear his disappointment at the council’s “cavalier” approach to the protection of the town centre and Lord St in particular.

He is urging local residents who share his concern about the council’s go ahead to a large Sainsbury superstore trading in food and non -food goods at the Homebase site at Meols Cop to e-mail him. The issue of empty shops in the town centre is probably the biggest local issue people raise with me- we have a chance in the next few days to stop that getting worse. We must take it. I will convey people’s feeling direct to the Planning Inspector. This is an out of town development too far which will help hollow out the town centre and add to traffic chaos at Meols Cop.
