Southport Melodic Jazz Weekend (24th June 2012)

A one day mini-festival to conclude SMJ’s 2012 Spring-Summer programme

The ‘mini-festival’ concept, providing 4 gigs on the one day, was started in 2009 to offer local jazz fans a wider choice and also to encourage more distant enthusiasts to ‘make a day of it’. Fans can buy tickets to individual gigs or Day Tickets which include a ‘dinner-jazz’ performance. The Royal Clifton also offers a very attractive B&B rate for Day Ticket holders wanting to stay over on Sunday 24th evening. These events have proved very popular and advance booking is recommended.

The day kicks off at 2 pm with a matinee concert by SMJ’s ever popular resident ‘Swingshift’ Big Band led by Phil Shotton.  In its 6 year association with the club the band has performed with many of the top UK jazz soloists and today’s is probably the most popular and busiest saxophonist, composer, arranger and band leader in the business, Mr Alan Barnes. Alan has also provided many of his own special arrangements for the programme which ends at 4.30.

Dinner-Jazz follows at 5pm in the Pavilion Restaurant with a 3 course carvery during which diners will be entertained by one of the jazz world’s most promising young  vocalists, Miss Emma Smith. Emma has performed at the London, Cork and Cheltenham Jazz Festivals and sings with the BBC Concert Orchestra, The National Youth Jazz Orchestra and Guy Barker’s big band.

The evening gala concert at 8 pm brings the music of the great Miles Davis to Southport with Terry Seabrook’s ‘Milestones’ sextet. Arranged and led by pianist Terry, the band includes some of the most dynamic and creative of the UK’s top jazz fraternity. On trumpet Martin Shaw, tenor sax Ian Price, double bass Paul Whitten, drums Spike Wells and with Alan Barnes making his second appearance of the day on baritone and alto saxes.
A late evening session at 11 pm in the Chatsworth Lounge, concluding around midnight, brings vocalist Emma Smith back to the stand with Matt Robinson on keyboards, Tim Thornton on bass and drummer Andy Ball.
