Southport Libdem Councillors deny residents the chance to quiz new Police & Crime Commissioner

Lib Dem councillors have refused to let local people hear Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Jane Kennedy explain her role and address the concerns of residents, says Southport Labour member, Ged Wright; after a request to invite Jane Kennedy to speak, was flatly turned down at the Southport Area Committee.

Birkdale resident and Labour spokesperson, Ged Wright commented: “We are being denied the chance to hear what a democratically elected public office holder has to say by local Lib Dem councillors. This flies in the face of democracy and accountability by blocking residents from having this opportunity.”

Jane Kennedy was elected, by the public, last November, under legislation brought in by the coalition government.  She is the first Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside.

Ged Wright added: “Following an article written by Lib Dem, Councillor Brodie-Browne, who poses the question ‘what does the PCC do?’  I suggested that it would be useful if the Police and Crime Commissioner was invited along to explain her role to Southport residents and councillors to address local issues and concerns.  Ironically, it seems Councillor Brodie-Browne has decided to forgo the chance to find out after all and stop everyone else, too.”

“My hope is that they will have a change of heart and allow Jane Kennedy , our first publicly elected PCC a voice in Southport.”
