Southport 1st XV win the John Winn Cup for the first time in years after completing the league double over Ormskirk. Likewise the 2s, but 3s defeated.

The John Winn Cup is contested between Southport and Ormskirk First XVs in memory of the legendary John Winn who served both clubs with great distinction.

John was a larger than life character who ran a garage behind the Scarisbrick Hotel and also a wig shop on King Street. He apparently once turned up resplendent at a ‘Tarts and Vicars’ night dressed as a bishop with mitre and staff. His cape was a colourful bedspread, which his wife Jenny had adapted, and the mitre was bejewelled with Rowntree’s fruit gums.

During the 1991 – 92 season John, as immediate past- Chairman of Southport RUFC, was instrumental in securing the funding for the past Captains and Presidents boards which adorn the club house bar area. He was also involved in the Colts set-up before decamping to Green Lane.

Thanks to both teams for playing the game yesterday in a competitive but great spirit and to Ormskirk for bringing the Cup with them. It’s been sometime since it resided at Waterloo Road and no doubt the Gingerbread men will be champing at the bit to get it back at the first opportunity. Until then though we will savour the moment.
