Take the plunge for the 2015 Virgin London Marathon

You don’t need an athletic body to be a Galloway’s Champion – Just a fundraiser’s heart.

Southport based charity, Galloway’s Society for the Blind are appealing for people across Sefton and West Lancashire to apply for a place in the 2015 Virgin London Marathon and be a Galloway’s Champion.

The charity, whose centre is on Wright Street, Southport, also has centres in Chorley, Morecambe and Preston and supports local blind and partially sighted people, helping them to regain their independence and reduce the effects of minimal vision. They do this through a variety of services including their talking newspapers, guided holidays, drop in days, advice, support, specialist equipment and their outdoor pursuit group. To continue these services, the charity needs to raise £1million this year.

The 34th marathon took place last weekend and saw a record breaking 40,000 runners pound the streets of London raising over £57million for various charities.

Mel Blackmore, a personal trainer at Virgin Active who took on the Virgin London Marathon to raise funds for the sight loss charity, commented, “It was an absolutely wonderful experience, spectators cheered me along from start to finish and crossing that finish line completely blew me away! I was really proud to run for Galloway’s Society for the Blind and am glad that I have helped them continue their fantastic work”.

Mel completed the marathon in 5 hours, 4 minutes and 33 seconds.

Emma Wilson, Fundraiser at Galloway’s commented, “For those of you who were inspired by the London Marathon over the weekend, we’d love you to take the plunge and apply for a place in this year’s ballot which opens on Tuesday 22nd April.  Last year, the ballot only stayed open for a record breaking 11.5 hours and saw 125,000 apply for a place in the world famous running event.”

Emma continued, “The ballot doesn’t get announced until early October, where the race organisers will let you know if you’ve been successful. If you are one of the lucky ones, we’d love you to run for our team. We’ll offer you training and fundraising support, along with a Galloway’s running vest and a chance to meet some other local runners for peer support. If you aren’t successful, we have a small number of charity places that we’d love you to apply for.”

The Virgin London Marathon is just one of many events which is part of “Galloway’s Champions”; a range of challenge events with something for all.  If running isn’t something that appeals to you; the charity also have open water swims, shorter distance running events, walks and much more.
