Hospital pharmacy welcomes international students

Five pharmacy students from the United States and Spain have been honing their skills and helping with patient care at Southport and Formby District General Hospital.

They are two Americans, Ashley Cortright and Matthew Smith, from Wingate University, North Carolina, and three Spaniards, Mikel Urretabizkaia, Laia Castro and Idoia Martinez, students at the University of the Basque Country.

The international placements, which are paid for by the students themselves, form part of their studies towards their degree qualification.

The Basque students are completing a six-month placement and the two American are part way through a six-week visit.

Chief Pharmacist Adrian Brown said: “It’s been a pleasure to have the five of them with us because the placements are of mutual benefit.

“They help my team on a day-to-day basis in the department as well as giving useful feedback from a different perspective on the way we work.”

The placements are now annual fixture in the Pharmacy calendar and Adrian is looking forward to welcoming more visitors later in the year.
