The Interact Group at KGV recently organised a staff versus student cycle challenge to raise money for the Literacy Box Trust charity who supply boxes of resources to schools in Zambia. During the course of the day, the total distance covered was 316.99 km (196.78 miles) with staff winning the challenge by a narrow margin! Staff travelled 160.71 km (99.67 miles) whilst students covered 156.28 km (97.11 miles). The PE and Sports staff were also victorious in their challenge against PE and Sport students and the best 10 minutes performance was awarded to Darren Brookfield, PE Course Leader, who covered 5.74 km (3.59 miles). Over £400 was raised in total which will enable a complete box of school equipment to be sent to Zambia plus a donation of the additional monies. One step closer to Thailand! Last weekend, a group of ten KGV students enjoyed a day bag packing at Morrisons, Southport to raise money towards their World Challenge Expedition. Challengers seized the opportunity to explain to happy Sunday shoppers what the trip of a lifetime to Thailand in 2015 will entail. The focus of the trip involves helping with a community project on the Thai-Burmese border called the Whispering Seed. The Whispering Seed is a US registered non-profit charity organisation that educates local people on sustainable living and learning whilst supporting traditional beliefs of the Thai culture. The organisation also houses orphaned children and provides support, care and learning opportunities for refugee children, displaced people and other ethnic minorities groups, including those who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. Other highlights of the expedition include living with traditional hill tribe communities, discovering the delights of busy Bangkok and exploring the spectacular Erawan Falls. Donations throughout the day came to a grand total of £774.35!! We would like to say a huge thank you to all those who donated and to the staff at Morrisons, Southport for organising the event and being so accommodating throughout the day.
