Public health is about helping people to stay healthy, and protecting them from threats to their health. From 1 April 2013, Sefton Council has responsibility for public health. The improvement of the public’s health will be achieved through the delivery of the Sefton Health and Wellbeing Strategy. Public health functions are grouped into four domains: 1.Improving the wider determinants of health 2.Health improvement 3.Health protection 4.Health care public health Wider Determinants Improving wider determinants of health takes action on the causes of ill health such as fuel poverty, transport and active travel, port expansion and air quality, planning and licensing for a healthier environment. Health Protection Public health has a duty to protect the public’s health in relation to emergency preparedness, environmental hazards and infectious diseases. Health Improvement Health improvement helps people live healthy lives, make healthy choices and reduce inequalities. It does this by enabling people to reduce unhealthy behaviours and by promoting positive health behaviours.
