Scheme Encourages Port Employment

A groundbreaking project has helped unemployed people in Sefton train for work with port-related employers.

Sefton Council, through [email protected] and Stobart Group, teamed up for the ‘Sector Based Work Academy’ programme which saw 21 local people receive training, work experience and guaranteed job interviews.

Since completing the scheme, 10 of the delegates have secured jobs and a further two have continued work experience with a view to future employment.

The two-week scheme was part of a broader partnership between [email protected], Stobart Group, several Port of Liverpool employers, Talent Training, and Job Centre plus.

The programme, designed and delivered by Stobart Group and [email protected], saw delegates attend workshops including teamwork, introduction to transport, supply chain and logistics, presentation skills, communication skills, employability skills, health and safety, and finance.

The delegates also gained work experience with the partner employers including Roport, Peel Ports, Docklands European, DACSA, Kindecs and Discount Express Retail.

Alan Lunt, Sefton Council’s Director of Built Environment said: “These interactive and dynamic workshops were designed to give delegates the best possible opportunity of gaining employment by providing them with the skills employers have expressed they would like to see in future employees.

“I am delighted that a number of delegates have secured jobs and further training. [email protected] are always looking for innovative and successful ways to create new opportunities and increase employment in the borough.”

* Further similar programmes are planned for employers across SuperPort and the Liverpool City Region.
