You can return to learning this September and choose from a range of career building courses with no up front course fees. If you’re aged 24 or older and are going to study on a course at Level 3 or 4 you can now apply for a loan to help with the cost of your course. This is an ideal opportunity for people who have previously been unable to enrol on a course due to the up front costs. And if the loan is for an Access to Higher Education course and you subsequently go on to complete a higher education course, you don’t have to pay the loan back at all. The course must start on or after August 1st 2013, and you can start applying for your loan from 1 April 2013. Please note, students aged under 24 will pay a different amount for their course fees if the course commands a fee. Under 24 course fees will be announced shortly. Gareth Lang worked as a door supervisor and was looking for a change of career when he heard good things about the Gas course and staff at Southport College. Gareth enrolled on the Gas course and ever since completing has been working full-time in the industry. During his course Gareth met Andy McMullen, a fellow Gas student who had previously worked for the Home Office. The two discussed going into a business partnership once they had completed the course.They successfully set up GMAC Plumbing & Gas Services and now have two employees and two subcontractors working for them on a variety of plumbing and gas jobs. Gareth said: “Studying Gas at Southport College was a great decision for me because the course provided me with not only a new career but also a new business partner. The facilities and quality of teaching are great and staff go above and beyond the call of duty to support students and help them to achieve,as well as preparing them for moving into employment. I learnt all I know at Southport College!” To get a loan you must be: •24 or older on the first day of your course (there’s no upper age limit) •Living in the UK on the first day of your course, and have lived in the UK, the Channel islands or the Isle of Man for 3 years immediately before this •Starting your course on or after 1 August 2013 •taking an eligible course that is level 3 or 4 Getting a loan doesn’t depend on your household income and there’s no credit check. Also repayments don’t start until April 2016 and you won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £21,000 a year. If the loan is for an Access course and you subsequently go on to complete a higher education course, you don’t have to pay the loan back at all. You can start applying for a loan from April 2013.
