A Fast thinking dad helped deliver his baby son in the living room of his Southport home… after his wife’s sneeze caused her to go into labour!

An extra sprinkling of pepper on an evening meal was more than enough to kick start an incredible hour long chain of events which eventually saw Rachel and Mark Singleton welcome their newborn baby boy into the world.

Due to the speed at which the labour happened, Mark had to deliver his son in the family’s living room before any medical help could arrive.

Their two older children were even drafted in to help, providing moral support and even cutting the cord!

It was a further 20 minutes after the baby was born that a midwife managed to get to the house.

Speaking to the Champion this week, Rachel explained: “Our baby was born last Wednesday evening and came so fast that my husband had to deliver him In our living room!

“I went into labour just after Mark put a sprinkling of ground pepper on his dinner causing me to sneeze.

“It just set me off and I felt a small pop which I instantly knew was my water breaking – but because the baby’s head was already practically ‘engaged’ there was hardly any water!

“All of a sudden contractions were coming thick and fast – one right after the other.

“I contacted the midwife but before I knew it, I could feel the baby’s head moving super fast. That’s when Mark had to take over.

“There was literally no break in contractions but Mark was very calming and helped me to regain my confidence and focus on being relaxed.

“This was all in the space of twenty minutes! Soon Mark was pressing my hips to help alleviate the pressure and then I had to push.

“The speed of labour was almost unbearable but Mark kept me relaxed and I knew it wouldn’t be long before baby appeared so I kept imagining holding the baby in my arms on the sofa.

“Mark eventually got behind me and helped deliver the baby fit and healthy within the hour, weighing 7lbs 15 oz.

“William, our two-year-old, was watching over Mark’s shoulder throughout and his sister, Lottie, cut the cord when the baby was born.”

“Mark was wonderful and the midwife full of praise for his actions.”

Now both mum and Mark are doing well… and recovering at their Hillside home
