Public meeting to be held on 10th October 2013 over closure of Churchtown Library (Southport) October 3rd, 2013 admin Latest News Latest Notices Shares Comments On behalf of The Friends of Churchtown Library Group: The Group was set up last year with the aim of maintaining a library provision in the area in response to Sefton Council’s proposal to close Churchtown library. Despite a sustained campaign against this proposal, including demonstrations, attendance at Council meetings and the presentation of thousands of petition signatures gathered by local businesses and retailers, the Council has announced that Churchtown library will close on 15 November 2013. The nearest library will then be in Southport Town centre which, for many, is not a practical alternative. The Group is therefore looking to provide some form of library provision for people in the Churchtown, Crossens and surrounding areas who rely on this service. We need a small area to provide computer access and a small selection of books. This would enable us at the very least to provide a pick-up and drop-off point, save the community from having to travel into Southport and maintain much of the footfall that the local businesses enjoy from those currently using the library. Please can you help us? For instance: Do you have or know of any such space that we could use for this? Would you like to work in partnership with us to provide a community library service e.g. internet/library café Would you be able to help with funding or sponsorship if we were able to secure new premises for the service? The Group currently has a list of volunteers willing to staff such a venture but the stumbling blocks are suitable accommodation and funding. If you are able to assist in any way please telephone or text Jean Kitchin on 07836 317678 or email Jean at [email protected] The Group is holding a public meeting at St Cuthbert’s Church on Thursday 10 October 2013 at 7.30pm. If you are able to help in any way and can let Jean know prior to the meeting that would be a big help but responses or suggestions will be welcome at any time.
