Preece hits out at Tourism Budget cuts

Labour at Budget Council Refuse To Produce Post Open Royal Birkdale Southport Economic Impact Post Event As They Cut Town’s Tourism Budget

Cllr Preece asked in full Budget Council  on Thursday night  for a financial impact report on Southport post our July Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, Southport.

Labour Cabinet Member Cllr Atkinson retorted briefly “we only recognise Sefton.”

Cllr Preece said “as someone who has lived through the 1960’s with Trevino, Jacklin, Mr Lou, Palmer through the 1970s with Ballesteros, Miller onto Baker Finch, Mark O’Meara and Padraig Harrington  the Open is so special to Southport. However the Labour Sefton Cabinet are cutting our Tourism Budget to our town and upping Council Tax but will not itemise what we here in Southport are generating thanks to

Royal Birkdale. I regularly knock on doors with our Southport public stating  we are a cash cow for other areas in Sefton. This attitude from the Labour Cabinet strengthens that prejudice. To propose cuts to our Tourism Budget potentially weakens our town Southport as a top resort in the country as we move forward in a highly competitive world. We cannot allow Tourism cuts. Our town is unique and needs marketing and developing.

With the attitude of this Labour Cabinet what will our town look like as a Tourism centre in a decades time when the Open returns in around 2026-27 when hopefully the world of golf will focus on Southport not Sefton again.”
