Potential new Southport Lifeboat Station design revealed

The Southport Offshore Rescue Trust are pleased to reveal an image of what the planned new Lifeboat Station could look like.

he two-storey building would be large enough to house all of the life saving equipment used by the trust, along with providing facilities to ensure the crew receive top class training.

Over £500,000 has been raised so far towards the build project which has all come from public donations.

Nick Porter, Lifeboat Coxswain and Trustee, said: “We’d really like to thank everyone who has contributed towards the project so far, the public response has been phenomenal.

“As a thank you for all the support, we’re delighted to share with you the latest boathouse design that we are currently working towards.

“There is still a lot of to be done behind the scenes so it is vital the hard work does not stop.”

A larger station would not only mean that both lifeboats and their respective launch vehicles can remain coupled together at a location closer to the beach, but would also include proper washing and drying facilities for all of the kit that the crew use.

The dream of a new lifeboat house has existed for nearly 20 years, however, the National Lottery rejected funding for a new station in 2000 leaving the trust to raise the necessary funds itself; the lifeboat house project unfortunately had to be shelved as other appeals, such as the new lifeboat appeal, took priority.

Since the purchase of the new Lifeboat in 2007, efforts have been focused on raising funds towards the new Lifeboat House, alongside improving on the quality of service currently provided.

“We have been working hard for many years to make the dream of a new Lifeboat house a reality.  Our current boathouse was built in 1886, and suffers from a lack of wash facilities, heating and space.

“We currently have one of our lifeboats stored in a shipping container behind the lifeboat house, and other vital equipment stored offsite. Bringing all of our assets together and under one roof will allow us to operate a lot more smoothly.”

More information on the building will be announced in the New Year.
