Planned road works in the North West – Monday 8 August to Sunday 14 August 2016

Planned road works in the North West – summary for Monday 8 August to Sunday 14 August 2016

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 5 August and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 junctions 16 to 19: Cheshire smart motorway

Work is underway for the smart motorway upgrade – typically with 1 or 2 lanes closed overnight between junctions in both directions and/or mobile lane closures along short sections of carriageway.   More information about the project is available on the project website:

M6 junctions 29 to 30

Work began on 1 August to resurface 2 miles of carriageway between junction 29 and junction 30 around the interchange with the M61.  The work will cover 3 lanes in both directions.  Full carriageway closures will be in place between 9pm and 5am (7am at weekends) while work takes place.   Work this weekend (southbound carriageway closures between the 2 junctions on Saturday and Sunday nights) will be followed by the closure of the exit slip road at junction 30 onto the M61 on Monday and Tuesday nights (8 and 9 August).  Drivers can join the M61 via the M65 from junction 29 of the M6.

M6 junction 32 bridge repairs

The second phase of repairs to Fylde Higher Bridge near Broughton, which carries the M6 southbound link road onto westbound M55 will start on Tuesday (9 August) and includes a full southbound carriageway closure overnight on Wednesday (10 August).  A diversion will be in place via junction 1 of the M55.

M6 junction 34 Lancaster

Lancashire County Council work off the motorway on the Heysham Link project requires a lane 1 and hard shoulder closure in both directions on the motorway around junction 34.   The northbound entry slip road will be closed between 8pm and 6am on Thursday and Friday nights (11 and 12 August) with the southbound exit slip road closed between 8pm and 6am on Saturday and Sunday nights (13 and 14 August). More information is available here:

M6 junctions 36 to 35 Burton

Work is ongoing on the southbound carriageway for surfacing, drainage and barrier renewal works. There will be a full overnight closure in place on Monday 8 August.

M60 junction 8 Sale to junction 20 Rochdale

A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers. A significant programme of temporary night closures has been programmed to fit gantries with wiring and signs, which will take the project to May 2017.     Work to install the scheme’s final ‘supergantry’ will take place overnight tomorrow (Saturday 6 August) between junction 12 and junction 13 of the M60 with a full carriageway closure and signed diversions in place.  These are detailed on the journey impact tab of the project page and updated weekly, subject to weather conditions.  See the project page for details: The project is due to be completed in autumn 2017.

M60 junctions 22 to 24

Night closures on the clockwise carriageway, Monday to Friday from 20 June, 9pm to 5am (7am Saturday mornings) – for 7 weeks, for resurfacing. Signed diversions.

Access from the southbound M6 onto the M61 (see M6 junctions 29 to 30 entry above) will be affected by resurfacing along the southbound M6 next week with the link road onto the M61 closed overnight on Monday and Tuesday nights (8 and 9 August).  Drivers can access the M61 via the M65 by leaving the M6 at junction 29 instead.

A556 Knutsford to Bowdon

A £192 million project is being carried out to create a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire.   The exit slip road from the M56 at junction 7 is now closed for up to 4 months for work to provide new link roads and a new roundabout at the junction is completed. More information is available on the project website:

A56 Rising Bridge roundabout

Work has started to improve safety and reduce delays at Rising Bridge Roundabout near Haslingden. Work will be carried out daily between 8pm and 6am, and will involve single lane closures on the A56 and Rising Bridge roundabout. Some full carriageway closures will be needed, during which times fully signed diversion routes will be in place.    The next overnight roundabout closures are scheduled to take place on successive Sunday nights from Sunday (7 August) and again on Sunday 14 and 21 August.   A further overnight closure is scheduled to take place on Sunday 4 September.

A590 Greenodd

Lane 1 of the eastbound carriageway just west of Greenodd roundabout is currently closed until further notice while we undertake a survey of the embankment.

A590 Red Syke bridge to Swarthmoor

A £590,000 overnight resurfacing scheme gets underway on Monday (8 August) and is expected to take up to 5 weeks with temporary traffic lights in place during the working hours of 7pm to 6am.   A 40 mph speed limit will also be in place.

A590 Ulverston

Overnight traffic signals will be in place on some Saturday nights (10pm to 10am) from 13 August into October whilst painting work is being undertaken to the bridges at Red Syke and Dykelands.

A590 Lindal

Work to complete interim improvements to tackle flooding has been postponed until after the school holidays.

A595 Thornhill to Blackbeck

Works are ongoing to renew road signs and markings between Iron Bridge and Blackbeck roundabout. Traffic signals will be in place overnight for the duration of the works, which will complete on Sunday 21 August.

Overnight resurfacing on both the northbound and southbound carriageways between Junction 1 and Junction 2 is continuing. The scheme also includes replacement of bridge joints. The works involves overnight carriageway closures between 8pm and 5am (7am at weekends). Full closures will be required and signed diversion routes will be in place.

A66 Bassenthwaite Lake

Overnight work to resurface a section of the eastbound carriageway will begin on Monday (8 August) with overnight closures of the carriageway – between 8pm and 6am each night – for up to 4 weeks.   Signed diversion routes will be in place with cars leaving the A66 at Papcastle and rejoining the A66 via the A595 to Bothel and A591 at Keswick.   HGVs will need to use the A595 and then travel to the M6 at junction 44.    A lane closure will be in place during the day.   No work will take place over the August bank holiday weekend.

A66 Brougham to Center Parcs

Resurfacing works began on 13 June to run until the middle of August. The use of traffic signals will revert back to the original programme with lights in place 24/7 from Tuesday to Thursday, and then again 8pm Friday until 7am Sunday, and overnight Monday. A temporary mandatory 40mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works, with this being reduced overnight when a 10mph convoy system will be used.
