Southport Library was under siege with pirates as a swashbuckling day of fun was held at the new facility.   As part of the opening celebrations and to reveal the name of the new pirate boat, the library opened its doors to a horde of unruly pirates.   Children of all ages took part in a treasure hunt, made pirate themed crafts, played pirate games and even sang pirate songs.   The highlight of the morning was the unveiling of the pirate boat’s name following a competition which received more than 200 entries.   9-year-old Poppy Stewart from Aintree and Joe Catton, aged 10, from Southport, both came up with the clever name of the ‘Book-a-neer’ and won book tokens for their endeavours.   During the day there was also the best dressed pirate competition with other prizes on offer.

Children and Young Person’s Librarian, Lesley Davies, said: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves on the day with so many young people and staff embracing the pirate theme.   “The ship is already proving a big hit with people visiting the library and if you haven’t seen it yet, please come and cast an eye on it for yourselves!”   The fully refurbished Southport Library opened its doors in April and follows a major improvement to the Lord Street building which is part of the wider Atkinson cultural centre project.
