Payoffs by Merseyside’s Labour Police Commissioner head for £700,000

Merseyside’s new Police Commissioner, Labour’s Jane Kennedy, has authorised pay-outs to staff departing from her office of nearly £700,000 – that’s according to Accounts just published.

Birkdale Lib Dem Councillor Simon Shaw (pictured) is a member of the Merseyside Police Panel, and has condemned the amounts involved as “a shocking misuse of public funds.”

Hidden away within her annual accounts to 31 March 2013–Statement-of-Accounts-2012-13–%285%29.pdf

is the information that she authorised £182,000 as ‘Compensation for loss of office’ to her first Chief Executive who left in December 2012.  She paid out a further £100,000 in compensation to her second Chief Executive who left in February 2013.  Further smaller pay-outs totalling £415,000 to ten other staff make a total of £697,000 in ‘exit packages’.

Councillor Shaw warned on OTS News two months ago, Jane Kennedy had already agreed payouts totalling over £360,000 to departing staff in her own Office.

“It now appears that the true figure is twice as much,” said Councillor Shaw.

“This is a shocking misuse of public funds on the part of Labour’s Jane Kennedy, who has just proudly announced on her own website that she will shortly be on her fourth Chief Executive, to be paid a salary of £75,000 a year.

“I am absolutely appalled that the Police Commissioner spent nearly £700,000 in just four months on pay-offs to staff in her Office,” said Councillor Shaw.

“It’s not quite at BBC levels, but I do feel it is a shocking misuse of public funds on the part of Jane Kennedy.”

“You can get a lot of Police Officers or PCSOs on the street for £700,000,” added Councillor Shaw.

Having got rid of twelve of the twenty staff that she inherited when she took over in November 2012, Police Commissioner Kennedy has recently advertised for new staff including a £45,000 a year Press Secretary and a £28,000 a year Private Secretary.

Jane Kennedy was elected in November 2012 on a turnout of just 12.5%, one of the lowest in the country.  She is paid £85,000 per year as Police Commissioner.
