The Merseyside Orange Order March will once again take place in Southport on Saturday July 11th despite expressions of concern from residents, traders and councillors.  Last year there was considerable unhappiness at the state in which Princes Park was left by March supporters and there were allegations of open public urination on private property near the march route going unapprehended.

Town Centre Lib Dem Councillor Tony Dawson, who has sought assurances from Sefton Council and the Police about better regulation of this activity, has been informed by Margaret Carney, Chief Executive of the Council, that  they will be taking guidance from the Police about how to enforce by-laws about littering etc. This has previously meant turning a blind eye to behaviour not normally tolerated in the town 51 weekends of the year.

Cllr Dawson says:

“All the residents of this town want is a level playing field. It cannot be right if a local resident stepping out from a wedding reception at one of thee town’s hotels gets treated differently for street drinking or littering than someone who comes to town for Orange Day.”
