One week to go to 10 July local government and school workers strike July 6th, 2014 admin Latest News Shares Comments One week to go to 10 July strike With one week to go to the local government and school workers strike, UNISON has again stressed the importance of members taking action next Thursday. In a message to members, the union says that 10 July is “our chance to stand up for what is ‘really fair’ for school and council workers – the lowest paid of all”. Local government and school workers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland voted for strike action after rejecting the employers’ pay offer of just 1%. While the empolyers argue that their offer is “fair” UNISON is stressing that it isn’t “fair” that the true value of their pay has fallen by 20% since 2010. And to counter the argument that employees should not be striking as they have a ‘duty’ to the communities they serve, the union is stressing that it is these same employees who are covering over 500,000 jobs lost since 2010 with very few cuts to services. This strike is about pay – but it is also about the future of the services these employees provide. Services used by everyone. Submit News Contact us with your community, business or sport news.
