Southport residents are being urged to be on their guard after a report of people posing as council officials in Southport.

A couple claiming to be social workers knocked at an address in Birkdale and attempted to gain access to the house.

When challenged, the couple left the property quickly and did not return.

Merseyside Police since launched an investigation into the incident and enquiries are ongoing.

Residents should not hesitate to call the police should they have any suspicions.

A Sefton Council spokesman said: “Thankfully this resident did just the right thing and did not allow these people into the house.”We would encourage people to be on their guard and always check the identification of anybody who seeks to gain access into their home.“

Anyone with information is asked to call Merseyside Police on the 101 number or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
