Issue No 1                     Dec 2013

Welcome to the first issue of the North Meols Library Association (NMLA) newsletter.  NMLA are a non political community group who have joined together to create a volunteer run library for Churchtown and the surrounding area. We have a large group of ‘friends’ gathered under the banner of Friends of Churchtown Library. We have a Steering Group and a core Management Committee consisting of the following Nigel Ashton (chair) Elaine Langley (secretary) Barbara Hughes (treasurer) Jean Kitchin, Julie Wickham and Kim Ardron.

Do you recognise the building above?

It’s the bowling pavilion in Botanic Gardens.

We’ve been given ‘broad agreement’ by the council to look at this for our community library. We’re a long way from being able to apply for formal permission but we think it is a great place for a library.

Partnership really works

We have formed a splendid working partnership with the Reverend Jan Fraser, Marshside Road and Crossens Methodist Churches. Initially they offered us storage space at Marshside for all the books that our “Friends” have donated or purchased for us. Now we are working with the Church at Crossens to provide Storytime for young children under school age. This helps to plug a real gap left by the closure of the library at Churchtown as the Storytime was a very popular aspect of the service they provided. Kim Ardron is leading this for NMLA.

Kim is a qualified Childcare Practitioner and has full enhanced CRB checks. This will start on 14th January 2014. Our next achievement is likely to be a second venue for internet access at Marshside Road Methodist Church. We are hoping to get that off the ground early in the New Year. So a huge thank you to Reverend Jan Fraser and her teams at Marshside Road and Crossens for your help and support.

We still need help

We have made a lot of progress in the short time since Churchtown library closed but we are a small group and we really need more help from our “Friends” if we are going to make a success of this. We need more volunteers to host the wifi sessions at Crossens Community Centre on a Wednesday between 12 -2pm. We will also need hosts for our new wifi access venture at Marshside Road Methodist Church in the New Year. Have you got an odd hour to spare or know anyone else who would like to help with this?

Once we get the go ahead from the council we will to able to start work on our new premises at the Bowling Pavilion in Botanic Gardens. We need people who can help clean the place up and carry out some DIY. Can you help with that? Perhaps you are (or know) a tradesman who has a quiet patch in January/February and could help us out maybe in a materials only basis. We have had an initial overview of the premises from a local builder and plan to organise a survey early in the New Year so we will have a better idea of the help we need soon. If you can help or know anyone else who can please let us know.

Laptops – when we start our second internet access session in the New Year we will need two laptops. Have you got one sitting about or are you upgrading over Christmas and have a laptop in reasonable condition that you will no longer use?

Funding – Donations/Sponsorship

We now have a bank account and we have a very small amount of money in it. We are working towards setting ourselves up as a registered Charity and we are aware of some grants that may be available to us. We will be working hard on this but we need help from donations and sponsorship. Every little helps so if you can spare even a few pounds for a donation we will be very grateful. Any company’s willing to sponsor us will be welcomed with open arms. We are planning loads of publicity so there would be some return for your sponsorship. Once again, if you can help or know anyone who can, please contact us.
