Knowsley Council have said ‘No to Joe’ and scuppered Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson’s hopes of taking control over Southport and the whole of  Merseyside.

Knowsley Councillors have voted to block the move to have an elected Mayor for Liverpool City Region. They say there is “no public support” for a metro mayor in Merseyside and believe greater devolution is possible without creating an unnecessary extra tier of elected government”.
Knowsley Councillors have been backed by those on the Wirral, whose Leader Phil Davies says he is against the imposition of a Merseyside metro mayor. Councillor Davies feels there should be a local referendum before any such job is created, a policy which was put to the Sefton Council meeting in November by the Liberal Democrats. The Lib Dem motion but was refused by Labour whose Leader Councillor Peter Dowd, is Joe Anderson’s only ally within Merseyside councils.
