No room for One Direction on Live Sounds radio show

Mighty Southport Radio host Martin Hovden is delighted by the response of local bands and singers to appear as studio guests on his Live Sounds show.

He’s been inundated with requests over the past fortnight and there is now a 10-week waiting list.

“I’m used to having a four to six-week waiting list but 10 weeks is an excellent reflection of how healthy and active our local music scene is.

We always give priority to our local musicians,” explained Martin who started Live Sounds as a newspaper column more than 10 years ago before it transferred to the airwaves with Southport Community Radio, Dune FM and now Mighty Southport Radio.

“We broadcast live from 7pm-10pm every Wednesday – and I like the bands or singers to stay for the whole three-hour show rather than do a 10-minute slot and then be asked to leave.

“This allows listeners to hear a good selection of the band’s music and enjoy the sometimes hilarious response to robust, incisive but never too serious questions.”

He added: “Thanks to social media, we get lots of messages sent in during the show and I have to admit some of the questions for our guests are better than mine. The current record of 83 emails or texts received during one show is held by young Southport hiphop artist Harrison Eden, closely followed by singer/songwriter Lisa Murdoch and power metal outfit Battalia.

“The whole three hours of Live Sounds is devoted to local music so there’s plenty of time to introduce listeners to the work of our local music scene.

“As I said we don’t have space on Live Sounds for bands like One Direction although Mighty Southport Radio has plenty of time for national and international artists elsewhere in the schedule.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming new Southport band Lana (pictured) on this Wednesday’s show. I saw them play live at the Alpine club the other week and they’re very good. Three members – Cameron Maerevoet (a Live Sounds co-presenter), Josh Knight and Kurt Kenningley – used to be in One Mark Off and are great ambassadors for our local scene.”

Future guests include Dave Aston, A Glitch In The System, Beyond Recognition, Sean Armstrong, Matchstickmen, Dusky Grey, Counterpoint, Steffi Almond and David Hegarty.
