New mental hospital planned for Southport

Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust is inviting people to share their views at public consultation events where proposals for a state of the art new mental health hospital in Southport will be revealed.

The Trust is proposing to rebuild its existing mental health unit on the former Southport General Infirmary site, off Scarisbrick New Road, and once complete will move all services from the Hesketh Centre, Albert Road, there by 2019.

The proposals will ensure the Southport and Formby areas have modern, fit for purpose inpatient mental health care integrated with outpatient services and community teams on one site.

Award-winning Clock View Hospital in Walton is Mersey Care’s most recently completed scheme and now the focus of attention moves to the redevelopment of part of the historic former Southport General Infirmary site.

A Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson said: “Mersey Care has ambitions to build two further hospitals like Clock View in Southport and Liverpool.

“The Southport redevelopment will provide all of the beds we currently offer at the inpatient wards at the Boothroyd Unit and Hesketh Centre. Importantly it will provide all inpatients with their own individual en suite rooms to promote privacy and dignity. Therapy areas and access to safe inner courtyard gardens will help people’s recovery.

“We are continuing to work with local authorities to try and convert our proposals into designs and plans we can share with all our stakeholders.”

Mental health champion Councillor Paul Cummins said: “This is about improving mental health services for the people of Southport and Formby and I would urge local people to come along to the consultation sessions to find out more and give their views.”

Mersey Care remains committed to providing ‘perfect care’ and an important part of this is providing services in buildings with facilities that are comfortable, therapeutic and support people towards recovery.

The public consultation events are:

  • Tuesday 13 December (10am to 7pm) at Hesketh Centre, Garden Room, 51-55 Albert Road, Southport, PR9 0LT.
  • Wednesday 14 December (10am to 7pm) at Boothroyd Unit, First Floor Meeting Room, Curzon Road, off Scarisbrick New Road, Southport, PR8 6PH. Note wheelchair access is only available at the Hesketh Centre event. No need to book, just drop in.
