Near brush with death at faulty Birkdale train crossing

A motorist had a brush with death on Thursday night (January 12) when a faulty train crossing failed to alert him to an oncoming train.

The man, who didn’t want to be named, was travelling down Crescent Road in birkdale when a train came hurtling through the crossing without warning.

The barrier and warning lifts had failed to activate. If it wasn’t for the drivers quick thinking, he would have been killed.

Resort resident, Robert Hemmings told OTSNews.co.uk : “It was about five to nine and as I approached the crossing a train came straight across travelling from hillside towards Southport. There were no warnings and no lights flashing.

“I immediately stopped and called the emergency telephone at the crossing but Merseyrail said there had been no fault reported.

“Shortly afterwards the police turned up.”
