Last weekend seven advanced level students at King George V College competed in the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport National Finals at Northumbria University, winning three silver and one gold medal.

These students achieved their place in the National Finals after succeeding against competition from other local Colleges in a variety of different sporting tournaments, during the Regional qualifiers which took place in venues across the North West.

Laura Rummens, BTEC Sport Teacher at King George V College, said: “Our students performed fantastically over the weekend and once again showed that KGV is a dominating force within sport.”

Nathan Browne, a Sports Leader at the College, competed in Cross Country and his combined effort with the rest of the North West team saw him walk away with a deserving silver medal.

Nathan commented: “I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of such a great experience and represent the college at a national level.”

Jordan MacDonald, who competed in the 50m and 100m butterfly, the 50m medley relay and the 50m free relay, gained a gold individual medal and a silver team North West medal.

Alec Scott and Max Noble, who returned to the Men’s Badminton Doubles after achieving silver medals at last year’s National finals, were hot favourites from the beginning of the competition and the pair continued to perform strongly throughout the weekend. They achieved an exemplary silver medal.

Other notable performances included Alex Gould who faced tough competition in his squash matches and came away with a very respectable fifth place position.

Katie Dixon-Turner and Rachel Newnham also performed outstandingly in the Women’s Badminton Doubles and went through to the quarter finals of the competition.

Katie Dixon-Turner, also a Sports Leader at the College, added: “It was a really enjoyable weekend and an amazing experience.”

In September 2016, KGV will launch a new Sports Academy. Check out www.kgv.ac.uk for further information.
