Text messages and phone calls started coming in at about 1:00pm this afternoon (Tuesday 6th August 2013). Some reported a Twister and others reported an Oil Rig and a ship on fire. Flames reaching at least 25 foot high and trailing black smoke could be seen from the coast of Southport. HMS Coastguard confirmed it was a Oil Rig in Morecambe Bay burning off excess gas in a controlled way – giving off large amounts of thick black smoke.
