Local MP John Pugh called the former Liberal Democrat leader a “brave individual with strong beliefs and principles” after he was found dead at his home on 1st June, 2015.

Charles Kennedy was a familiar face in Southport, often lending his personal support to Liberal Democrat colleague John Pugh’s General Election campaigns, and visiting Southport for party conferences in 2001 and 2004.

The MP for Southport said:

“He brought so much that was positive in the way of wit, common sense and sound morality to politics from his Highland roots.

“Sadly it was the Highlands’ best-known product that has been his nemesis and crushed by political misfortune and the recent loss of his parents this was the outcome many dreaded would happen.

“Like most Highlanders he bore his grief bravely and privately unaware perhaps of the extent to which people valued him and his contribution to public life.”

It is still unsure that the cause of death was but is believed to be due to his public problems relating to alcohol.
