The work of Merseyside Police’s Special Constabulary will be brought into the spotlight this weekend during the force’s operation around the Grand National Festival (Thursday, 3 to Saturday, 5 April)

National Specials weekend takes place from Friday to Sunday and is designed to highlight the vital role performed by the Special Constabulary and the ongoing contribution its members make to policing in their communities.

Grand National weekend (Friday, 4 and Saturday, 5 March) is always one of the busiest times for Merseyside and this year we’re expecting a large number of people to come into the city.

More than 40 Merseyside Police Special Constables will be at Aintree race course this weekend providing reassurance and dealing with issues during the three day event.

A further 70 Special Constables will be taking positive action, so people are able to enjoy our city, in a safe environment. Working with their regular counterparts, they will be putting measures in place to address issues such as personal safety and alcohol and drug related violence.

Merseyside Police Special Constabulary currently has 410 volunteer police officers who give their time to help make their communities safer.

Acting Chief Officer Mike Morgan, Merseyside Special Constabulary, said: “Our volunteer police officers play a vital role within Merseyside Police and this operation demonstrates their value in policing.

“They police the communities they live in, choosing not only to uphold a full time career, but to go that extra mile to ensure our streets and communities are a better place to be in.

Special Constables have exactly the same powers, equipment and uniform as their regular counterparts, therefore the public expect the same level of service.”

Last year the Special Constabulary gave nearly 180,000 hours of volunteer policing across the Force; our dedicated Special Constables are volunteering their time every week to help their communities and tackle issues that matter to residents.
