MATCH PREVIEW | Southport v Torquay United

Repetitive as it may sound after four weeks of saying something along these lines, Southport go into the weekend knowing that they absolutely have to gain three points.

Defeat at Maidstone United left the Sandgrounders bottom of the Vanarama National League and facing an uphill task to stay in the division. While things admittedly look bleak, a win against Torquay United will at least put Southport back in touch with safety.

Torquay’s form is just as poor as Southport’s having picked up just six points since the turn of the year in comparison to the Sandgrounders’ seven.

They looked destined for three points at home to Guiseley on Saturday, one goal ahead against ten men with an hour on the clock. They conspired to concede twice, however, and throw away the points.

The contrast between events at the top of the table and the bottom add salt to the wounds for the Southport faithful.

If they switch the TV on when they return home following yet another relegation scrap, they will be greeted with images of National League table toppers Lincoln City facing Arsenal at the Emirates in the quarter finals of the FA Cup.

There was optimism aplenty during Southport’s short but memorable cup run. Avoiding relegation seemed a formality during that period, following Steve Burr’s rebuilding of the squad. Several injuries and a managerial departure later, one can’t help but ask where, exactly, did things go so badly wrong.
