Loan Shark Awareness Event

A lucky resident won gift vouchers following an awareness event about the dangers of illegal loan sharks.

Laura Waters from King Avenue, Bootle, was presented with her prize by staff from Sefton Council and One Vision Housing.   More than 400 people attended the ‘Sharkys Fun Day’ earlier this year Springwell Park Children’s Centre.   Residents were asked to complete a quick questionnaire about their knowledge and possible experiences of loan sharks.

Representatives from the England Illegal Money Lending Team and a range of other agencies were on hand offering advice on avoiding loan sharks, getting back into work, changes to welfare and other issues. Sefton Credit Union, [email protected], One Vision Housing, Riverside Housing and Citizens Advice Bureau were also on hand.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Environment, said: “It is important that we continue to highlight to residents the dangers of getting involved with loan sharks.   “By working with our partner agencies we can join forces to help try and end this practice which ultimately damages local communities.”

Similar awareness events are planned later this year.
