Lib Dems’ Maghull victories over Labour are national ‘first’

Liberal Democrats throughout Sefton Borough are celebrating two Town Council election gains from the Labour Party in the Sudell Ward of Maghull with a swing of over 20 per cent to the Lib Dems. This is the first reverse like this for the Labour Party in any contest of this size in the UK since the last General Election.

The two Lib Dem victories in Sudell Ward represented a swing of over 20 per cent from Labour to Lib Dem since Sudell Ward was last contested in May 2012. The Lib Dems aso nearly gained (9 votes short) the Maghull South ward as well which would have given them a clean sweep of the three Town Council elections all held on the same day.

Lib Dem Leader on Maghull Town Council, Tony Robertson, put the victory down to local people finally seeing through the Labour Party’s ever-escalating dishonesty, especially over their unpopular Green Bin Tax proposals:

“They have been quite clever in the past, doing one thing and telling the public they were doing something else,” he said, “but they clearly panicked in this election and the scale of their pretence was so dramatic that they lost all credibility and were rejected. On both Green Belt and Green Bin Tax they claimed black was white in respect of their own actions this year. The people were not taken in.”

“Everyone knew that the Lib Dems had been running a massive campaign against Labour’s £46.00 Green Bin Tax, gaining thousands of signatures, but Labour foolishly tried to pretend it was a Lib Dem Tax when everyone knows that Labour runs Sefton Council.”

“They were just as bad over the Green Belt. Labour has voted repeatedly for a Local Plan which includes unnecessary levels of building on the Green Belt. Sefton Labour Party has  backed building on Green Belt and local green space before, with the Lib Dems leading opposition to their plans. Most local people know well that the Lib Dems have been the ones fighting to protect Green Belt around here for the past 15 years or more.”
