Labour Police Commissioner appoints £45K Press Secretary

Birkdale Lib Dem councillor Simon Shaw has attacked the decision of Merseyside’s Labour Police Commissioner, Jane Kennedy, to appoint a £45,000 pa “Press Secretary”.

Cllr Shaw is a member of the Merseyside Police and Crime Panel, set up to srutinise the work of the Police Commissioner who was elected last November.

“I find the decision of Jane Kennedy to appoint a Press Secretary on a salary of up to £45,000 very concerning,” commented Councillor Shaw.

“At the same time she has cut back on other staff in her Office who should play a key role in helping her monitor the work of Merseyside Police, and how they spend £400 million a year of our money.”

“For example she has cut the Internal Audit staff in half and has completely scrapped her Police Performance Management & Monitoring team.  She says the Police will be largely left to monitor their own performance, but I don’t see that working at all well.”

“Although, overall, her staffing changes have saved a useful sum of money, that is not the only issue.  Personally, I think her main priority should be to monitor the Police on behalf of the public, not to put out countless press releases.”

Details of the new Press Secretary post within the Office of the Merseyside Police & Crime Commissioner are advertised at:

The stated salary is in the range of £39,807 – £44,526 pa.  Jane Kennedy is also advertising for a new Private Secretary with a salary of £23,799 – £28,107 pa.

Jane Kennedy herself is paid £85,000 pa as Police Commissioner.
