Volunteers are being sought to help set up a community cinema in Southport.

A meeting will take place on January 18 for people in the resort who want to get together and open a fully functional community cinema in a empty shop which would be refurbished.

The brains behind the idea, Michael Lockwood, told OTSnews: “I came up with the idea a while back because I was disappointed at the lack of other products on the market.

”There are a lot of communities setting these up and I am thinking the proceeds could benefit a local charity.

“Southport is compact and it has a great community aspect so it would hopefully make a popular new addition to the town!

”Do you want to volunteer and to help set up a new community cinema in Southport?

“There is a proposal to refurbish an empty shop and put in one or two small cinemas together with a café.

”The plan is to show matinee classic films and in the evening more newer independent films that do not get shown at multiplex cinemas.

“There are meetings at 6.30pm on Mondays from January 18 at a venue to be decided when volunteers can suggest a way forward.

Following those meetings anyone over 18 can join SCC for £1 and see a film at 7.30pm for £3 per person per night.
