Following an exceptional run of sporting performances, 10 KGV students have secured a place to represent the College in their chosen sport at the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sports National Finals. Students fended off tough competition from local Colleges, such as Runshaw and Winstanley, in the regional heats to qualify for the National Finals, which will be held at The University of Bath in March 2015.

AoC Sport is the lead membership organisation for College sport and physical activity that encourages students to participate in sporting activities as part of their College experience.

Around 25 KGV students competed in the AoC Sport Regional qualifiers at venues across the North West. Students participated in a range of tournaments including Swimming, Badminton and Cross Country.

Students who won their regional qualifier to secure a place in the National Finals are:

Aaron Jarvis – Cross Country

Alec Scott & Katie Dixon-Turner – Badminton: Mixed Doubles

Arron Ken – Squash

Jack Hughes & Matthew Bond – Tennis: Men’s Doubles

Jordan MacDonald – Swimming: 50m Men’s Butterfly

Matthew Nuttal – Golf

Max Noble & Nathaniel Browne – Badminton: Men’s Doubles

A number of students narrowly missed out on a place in the final. Runners-up included: Naomi Jarvis and Emma Hall (Badminton); Carlos Hollyman (Tennis);  Kyle Lavender, Oliver Moir and Matthew Bond (TableTennis); Paul McKearney and Jacob Lea (Swimming). Other commendable performances included Nathan Browne (Cross Country) and Jack Harrison (Golf).

Darren Brookfield, PE Course Leader, commented, ‘This has been the best ever year for KGV Sport! To have ten students qualify for the National Finals in six different sports is an outstanding achievement. Throughout each tournament our students participated with competitive spirit and demonstrated determination and physical prowess.’

Christopher Pitts, AoC NW Regional Director, tweeted KGV Sport saying, ’10 students through to nationals now, next year #WorldDomination. Congratulations’

Well done to all students who participated and special congratulations to those who have qualified for the National Finals!
