KGV student Chloe in the running for Miss Southport

Chloe Brown, an Advanced Level student at King George V College, has been selected to compete in the Miss Southport Finals at The Atkinson in Southport on 5 June.

The competition, last won in 2011 by former KGV student Brea Carney-Jones, is open to young women aged 13-26. Those involved are expected to fundraise, help out in the community and develop into a local role model and ambassador.

Chloe, who studies Health and Social Care at KGV, said, ‘Over the past few weeks I’ve been raising money for Variety, the Children’s charity. This charity aims to help and support disadvantaged children and the money raised will be used to buy specialist equipment and fund day trips out.’

‘I’ve raised over £1500 so far through organising various events including a cake sale, car wash, raffle and coffee morning. I had never done any fundraising before but the more events I organised the more I wanted to do to help.’

‘I’ve had lots of support from local businesses. Yaffe Photography kindly donated £350 worth of vouchers to sell, Southport FC have donated a sports kit for me to wear during the fashion show at the finals and lots of other businesses donated prizes for a raffle I held at the Champs bar in Southport.’

Winning the regional event will lead to direct entry into Miss England, the finals of which will be held for the first time in Southport in July. Ultimately, entrants could see themselves competing in the Miss World competition and in the running to win $100, 000.

Chloe added, ‘I’ve really enjoyed the experience so far. I got involved because I thought it would be a good way to make new friends and build my confidence.’

‘I hope to study Nursing at University and become an Adult Nurse in the future. The confidence I have developed through being involved in Miss Southport will really help when it comes to having interviews for the course.’

Matt Fitzpatrick, Course Leader of Health and Social Care at KGV, said, ‘Chloe is a pleasure to teach. It’s been so rewarding to see her flourish over the two years and develop into a young woman that KGV and Southport can be very proud of.’

On 5 June, Chloe will take part in a fashion catwalk show during the Miss Southport finals at the Atkinson on Lord Street. Before deciding the winner of the competition, judges will take into account each girls performance in the fashion show, charity fundraising efforts and score in a social media challenge. A public text vote will also contribute to the overall scoring on the day.
