The bursaries, which give students the chance to work in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), are designed to give students a taste of careers in STEM subjects by enabling them to work alongside top scientists in different academic research environments. Stephanie Ramsurran, Rebekah Rimmer and Shauni Marrs were the recipients of this year’s awards. Stephanie worked with Professor SM Higham & Dr G Komarov, School of Dentistry, University of Liverpool, taking part in a project entitled “A double blind crossover study to evaluate the plaque inhibitory effects of various polyols in sugar-free chewing gum during stages of plaque regrowth”. Rebekah Rimmer worked alongside Dr G Parry, Institute of Integrative Biology, University of Liverpool on “Assessing the role of the plant nuclear pore complex in the growth response to abiotic stress” and Shauni Marrs worked With Dr Arshad Farath, Health Informatics Department, John Moore’s University to examine various eating disorders. All three students displayed their work at the Nuffield Celebration Evening on 17 October 2012 at The World Museum, Liverpool.
