Jealous cocaine addict John Durnin who attacked his partner after he mistook her for a woman pictured on a dating website has avoided jail. John Durnin was accused of attacking his girlfriend of eight years by grabbing her dressing gown and shaking her violently on 26th April, at their then home on Sussex Road, Southport.

Durnin, aged 32, received a 16 week prison sentence, suspended for two years at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court today after pleading guilty to assault and another account of criminal damage at an earlier hearing.

Lynn Clark who was prosecuting during the original hearing, told the court: “The victim says she was strangled by the defendant with her own dressing gown after he thought he saw her photo on a dating website.

Mr Currums said: “When he kicked down her front door she felt like she had no choice but to contact the police.” The court heard publicity around the case had caused “stress” to the victim and her family. David Kilty who was defending, told the court Durnin admitted he was “culpable” for the incident and accepted he needed to seek help for jealousy and drug issues.
