Info for Southport motorists on NW motorways for Monday 1 to Sunday 7 September

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 29 August and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 16 Barthomley

Overnight work is underway to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow at junction 16 of the M6. The scheme will provide a third lane on the north and southbound exit slip roads and the approach on the A500. Additional traffic lights will also be installed. There will be some overnight closures of slip roads and the A500 and B5078 at different stages of the project. A temporary speed limit of 50mph is also in place, and the project is expected to be completed by the middle of December.

M6 Junctions 20 to 21 Thelwall Viaduct

Work on the Thelwall Viaduct has almost been completed, and the temporary contraflow lane, 40mph speed limit and narrow lanes have now been removed. Joint replacement work on the viaduct is still required on the northbound exit slip road at junction 21 but this will be limited to occasional overnight lane and slip road closures at weekends.

M6 Junction 26 Orrell

A major project is taking place at Orrell Interchange, which will see extra lanes and traffic lights added to the junction with the M58 and the A577. The initial stage of work will require overnight closures of the link road between 10pm and 5am. The junction will remain open for vehicles travelling between the M6 and the M58, but a diversion will be in place for local traffic coming on or off the motorways at the interchange. The majority of the work for the rest of the project will take place overnight or at weekends and will require some closures of the southbound slip roads, the roundabout and the link road to the A577.

M6 Junction 32 Broughton Interchange

A project is being carried out to reduce congestion around the motorway junction which connects the M6 to the Blackpool-bound M55. There will be narrow lanes, plus some overnight slip road and carriageway closures until the project is completed in October.

M56 Junction 12 Runcorn to Junction 14 Helsby

Work is taking place to resurface the westbound carriageway of the M56 between junction 12 at Runcorn and junction 14 at Helsby. The work will also include the replacement of worn road markings on the eastbound carriageway. All of the resurfacing will be done overnight between 10pm and 5am, Mondays to Fridays. Lane closures and some overnight diversions will be in place. During the day, drivers may also notice some hard shoulder closures associated with the work.

M58/M57 Switch Island, Merseyside

The eastbound carriageway of the M58 between Switch Island and junction 1 is to be resurfaced over five nights from Monday 1 September. New road markings and reflective studs will also be installed on both sides of the motorway. Either the westbound or eastbound carriageway between Switch Island and junction 1 will be closed between 10pm and 5am on weekdays, or until 7am at weekends. Clearly signed diversions will be in place.

M60 Junction 8 Sale to M62 Junction 20 Rochdale

A major project is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The first stage of the smart motorway project will see engineers carry out site surveys and ground investigation work, with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers.

M60 Junction 24 Denton

Phase two of the Denton Island improvements is underway at junction 24 of the M60, where the motorway meets the M67 and the A57– a key commuter route into Manchester city centre. The whole project is due to be completed by Friday 19 December with most of the work carried out overnight. Some road and lane closures will be necessary.

A66 Brough

The eastbound A66 between Brough and Stainmore will be closed overnight this weekend and next weekend for wear and tear repairs. The project requires a lane closure overnight during the week and full carriageway closures at weekends. A diversion will be in place, and the project is due to be completed by Sunday 7 September.

A66 Bassenthwaite Lake

The westbound carriageway on the A66 will require a series of closures for up to three months from Monday 1 September while the Forestry Commission carries out tree felling at Wythop Forest. A contraflow system will be in place with a lane running in each direction along the eastbound carriageway. Temporary traffic lights will also be used on some occasions

A590 Ulverston to Brettargh Holt roundabout

A series of projects to tackle wear and tear on the A590 are due to start on Monday 1 September. All the work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am and should be completed by Friday 20 September. Temporary traffic lights and lane closures will be in place.

A595 Crossbarrow

There will be temporary traffic lights in place for boundary fence work on the footpath / cycleway around the junction with Great Clifton between 9.30am and 4.00pm, until Sunday 31 August. There will be a temporary 40mph speed limit past the roadworks.
