Info for Southport Motorists on NW Motorways for Monday 05 August – Sunday 11 August

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 2 August but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 32 Broughton to Junction 34 Lancaster

Maintenance work is being carried out to the M6 central reservation barrier between Junction 32 at Broughton and Junction 34 at Lancaster. The outside lane in each direction of the motorway will be closed between 6am and 8pm, and one or two lanes will be closed overnight. A 50mph speed limit is in place and the project is due to be completed by Friday 9 August.

M6 Junction 38 Tebay

A contraflow system will be in place on the M6 near Junction 38 at Tebay from Wednesday 31 July as part of a major refurbishment of a motorway bridge which carries the M6 over the River Lune. Southbound traffic will be directed into lanes on the northbound carriageway while the bridge is closed for the repairs. Two lanes will run in each direction and a 40mph speed limit will be in place. The project is due to be completed by Saturday 7 December.

M55 Broughton Roundabout

Lancashire County Council is carrying out improvement work at the roundabout linking Junction 1 of the M55 with the A6 at Broughton to reduce delays at one of Preston’s worst congestion hotspots. The scheme will widen the junctions with the A6, add traffic controls to all junctions, and make it safer to use for pedestrians and cyclists by installing new crossings while retaining the existing subways. The work is expected to be completed by December.

M55 Junction 1 Broughton

Work to upgrade safety barriers and lighting along a section of the M55 near Broughton in Lancashire begins on Tuesday 6 August, and is due to be completed by Thursday 22 August. During the day, the hard shoulder and lane one of the entry slip road will be closed. Between 8.00pm and 6.00pm the slip-road, lane one and the hard shoulder will all be closed. Drivers wishing to join the westbound carriageway from the roundabout at junction 1 with the A6 will need to join the eastbound M55 instead – travelling down to junction 31 of the southbound M6 before turning onto the northbound carriageway and joining the westbound M55 from Broughton Interchange at junction 32 of the M6.

M55 Junction 4 Blackpool

Resurfacing of the eastbound carriageway around junction 4 of the M55 will start on Monday 5 August.  Work will be carried out overnight between 8.00pm and 6.00am with the eastbound carriageway remaining open to traffic using lane three of the carriageway or the hard shoulder. A 50mph speed limit will be in place. There will also be five overnight closures of the eastbound carriageway within junction 4 from Monday 5 August to Saturday 10 August.  Drivers on the A5230 unable to join the M55 directly but sent instead onto the roundabout with the A583 Preston New Road and eastbound entry slip from the roundabout.

The work also includes one day-long closure of lane one of the carriageway on Wednesday 14 August for excavation work.  The project is due to be completed on Monday 19 August.

M56 Junctions 1 with M60 to 3, Baguley, South Manchester

A maintenance and repair project is taking place on a motorway bridge over a railway line in South Manchester. The eight-month scheme to repair the bridge – which carries the M56 Sharston Link over the Cheadle Branch railway line – is due to be completed by October. It involves replacing the existing parapets, repairing abutments, installing new expansion joints and bearings maintenance. Drivers are being advised that both the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the M56 between Junction 1 with the M60 and Junction 3 at Baguley, as well as junction slip roads, will be closed overnight, from 9pm until 5am, to allow the work to be carried out safely. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place when the road is closed.

M62 Junction 20 Oldham and Rochdale

Work is taking place to upgrade lighting and safety barriers around Junction 20 of the M62 at the interchange with the A627(M). The three-month project is due to be completed by Friday 30 August, ahead of the August bank holiday weekend. Some overnight closures of the eastbound entry and westbound exit slip roads will be needed to allow the work to be done safely. Traffic will be diverted to Junction 19 when the slip roads are closed.

A590 Greenodd

Preparation work is underway for the construction of a £2.7 million roundabout at Greenodd.  The first phase of work will involve earthworks around the junction to prepare the ground for the construction work on the roundabout itself which will begin in the autumn.  Starting on Monday 5 August until Sunday 11 August there will be 3 way traffic lights at the junction of the A5092 with single lane running on the Eastbound carriageway.

A595 Blackbeck to Calderbridge

There will be 2 and 3 way traffic signals from 8.00am to 4.00pm on Sunday 11 August and Sunday 18 August to allow safe access to carriageway boxes and ducts.

A595 Entrance to Beckermet Industrial Estate

There will be 2 and 3 way traffic signals to allow safe access to BT boxes along the carriageway and verge from 9.00am to 4.00pm on Sunday 11 August.

– Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.

– Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.

– Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.

– Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.

– Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.

– Observe all signs – they are there to help you.
