Info for Southport motorists on North West motorways  for Monday 13 – Sunday 19 January 2014

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 10 January but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 33 Lancaster

Work to install four of the latest giant electronic message signs near Junction 33 of the M6 will start on Monday 13 January. The signs will give drivers better warnings of incidents and other information about the motorway such as weather conditions. New CCTV cameras will also be mounted on the signs – allowing the Highways Agency to monitor and manage motorway incidents more effectively. The work should be completed by Friday 14 March. Lane one of the motorway is likely to be closed around the clock in both directions while the work takes place, and some overnight closures of lane two will also be necessary.

M6 Junction 38 Tebay

A contraflow system is in place on the M6 near Junction 38 at Tebay as part of a major refurbishment of a motorway bridge which carries the M6 over the River Lune. Southbound traffic will be directed into lanes on the northbound carriageway while the bridge is closed for the repairs. Two lanes will run in each direction and a 40mph speed limit will be in place. The project is due to be completed by March 2014

M60 Junction 24 Denton

A major project is taking place to boost safety and reduce congestion at Junction 24 of the M60 at the Denton Island roundabout where the motorway meets the M67 and the A57. The first phase of the project is due to be completed by February, with a second phase due to start in March. All of the work during the first phase will take place overnight, and involve lane closures and speed limit reductions on the slip roads and roundabout. At times, full slip road closures will be needed overnight with clearly-signed diversions in place. The whole project is due to be completed by June 2014.

M62 Junction 11 Birchwood to Junction 12 Eccles Interchange

Work is taking place to resurface and replace road markings and studs on all lanes of the M62 in both directions from junction 11 to 12. There will be a series of overnight lane closures running Fridays to Mondays from 10pm to 5am, with single lane running and a 50mph speed restriction. Between 5am and 10pm on Mondays all lanes will be kept open, and there will be daytime single lane closures on Saturdays and Sundays. Work will be completed in January 2014.

M602 Salford

Work is taking place to resurface and carry out drainage repairs along the M602 along parts of both carriageways and slip roads between Junction 1 at Eccles and Junction 3 at Regent Road. The work is being carried out overnight between 10pm and 5am on weeknights, and between 10pm and 7am at weekends. There will be some overnight closures of slip roads and carriageways around Junctions 2 and 3 and occasional overnight closures of the link roads to the M60 from Junction 1. Clearly signed diversions will be in place at these times. The work is due to be completed by Thursday 13 April

A66 Keswick and Appleby

Resurfacing work is taking place along a mile-long stretch of the A66 between Keswick and Crosthwaite Roundabout, and should be completed by Saturday 18 January. Work to resurface a two-mile section of the A66 near Appleby will also start on Monday 16 December and should be completed by Sunday 2 February. Work will be carried out between 8pm and 6am, and between 9.30am and 3.30pm. Temporary traffic lights and a reduced speed limit will be in place.

A590 Dalton-in-Furness

A project is underway to improve drainage on a mile-long section of the A590 near Dalton-in-Furness. Most of the work will be carried out using narrowed lanes, with temporary traffic lights in place between 9.30am and 3.30pm. There will also be a 40mph speed limit and laybys will be closed. The project is due to be completed by Sunday 26 January.

A590 / A5092 Greenodd

Work is taking place to build a new roundabout linking the A590 to the A5092 at Greenodd, with the aim of reducing congestion and improving safety. The A590 currently forms a T-junction with the A5092, with traffic having to pull into a gap in the central reservation to turn right towards Ulverston. The project is due to be completed by February 2014.
