Independent Age response to the comprehensive spending review

Independent Age Chief Executive, Janet Morrison, said:

“We welcome the principle of integrating health and social care but are concerned that the only genuinely new money appears to be for IT and administration, particularly in light of the wider 10% cut in council funding for 2015/16. If – as seems the case – the rest of the money is simply being transferred from existing health budgets, it creates real concerns about whether the NHS, already struggling to make year-on-year efficiency savings, will be able to operate on its already stretched resources.

Older people are the main users of these health services and demand is rising as the population is ageing. Integration of health with social care is not a simple panacea to the serious underlying funding problems in both systems.”
