With the Grand National fast approaching and ticket sales well underway, the marketing team at Channel 4 have come up with a novel idea for the Grand National advertising campaign.   Liverpudlians may have been a bit surprised to see ten stunt horses and ten jockeys (not to mention a crew of 300) take to the streets of the city to film a 90-second advert for the racing event.

The advert features horses racing through the iconic city, particularly in the area of Everton Park. In addition, the horses and jockeys swap fences for parked cars, back garden fences, picnic benches and allotments.

Filmed with 25 cameras, including a number of speed cameras, the advert will also show the horses racing past in an attempt to show the skill and expertise needed for events like the Grand National.

Furthermore, advert planners also wanted to show the excitement, drama and adrenaline that encompasses equestrianism and by putting them into an everyday environment, they are likely to achieve this.

Filming this type of feature takes a lot of skill on the part of the camera men, horses and jockeys.

It was necessary for the horses in particular to be experts at stunt work as well as being able to cope with surprising and unusual circumstances.

With this in mind, 4creative (the company behind the advert) were careful to use ten stunt horses from The Devil’s Horsemen, which is a company that supplies thoroughbreds for films and television. The ‘War Horse’ star Joey was also a part of the group and can be seen galloping through duck ponds and playing fields. The jockeys were not professionals, however stunt people and amateur jump jockeys made up the group of ten and were able to guide the horses expertly.   Big things are expected for this advert as 4creative won multiple awards for their ‘Meet the Superhumans’ advert during the Paralymic Games.
