Each year, Holocaust Memorial Day falls on January 27 – the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. Councillors and council officers will attend the memorial ceremony in Southport as well as members of the public. All will take part in a minute’s silence. Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Maureen Fearn, said: “Every year on January 27, the world marks Holocaust Memorial Day. “The day provides an opportunity for everyone to learn lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides and apply them to the present day to create a safer and better future for everyone. “At the annual Holocaust Memorial Service in Southport, we will share the memory of the millions who have been murdered in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur in order to challenge hatred and persecution in the UK today. “If you have the time, please come and join us to mark this important day.” The service in Southport is open to everyone, with refreshments served at the end.
